Renting a car in Martinique: the complete 2026 guide
Martinique has more than 70 beaches, a UNESCO-listed mountain, legendary distilleries and fishing villages spread over 1,100 km². The bus network is limited and taxis are expensive: a rental car is the only real way to discover the island. Here is everything you need to know before booking, from a 100% local agency.
How much does a car rental in Martinique cost?
Prices vary by category and season. Here are Sherley Location's rates, with unlimited mileage included (airport delivery €15):
| Category | Example | Price / day | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|
| City car | Kia Picanto | from €22 | Couples, town, southern beaches |
| Compact | Renault Clio | from €25 | All-rounder, island tour |
| Automatic SUV | Kia Stonic | from €35 | Comfort, easy driving |
| Hybrid SUV | Fiat Grande Panda / Dacia Duster | from €35 | Families, roads of the north |
| 9-seater minibus | Renault Trafic | from €90 | Groups, big families |
| Electric scooter | Yadea | from €15 | Short trips, seafront |
Tip: for rentals of 15 days or more, enjoy the long-stay discount. And the earlier you book, the more choice you have — in high season (November–April, July–August), fleets across the whole island are fully booked weeks in advance.
What documents do you need?
- Original driving licence that is still valid (Martinique is a French department: EU licences are accepted as is)
- Credit card in the driver's name for the security deposit
- An ID document for the rental agreement
How does the security deposit work?
The security deposit is a card pre-authorisation taken when the vehicle is handed over and released after the return inspection. A friendly tip: if you use an online bank, check your card limit before you travel, and be aware that some neobanks hold pre-authorisations longer than traditional banks.
5 pitfalls to avoid
- Booking too late in high season: no vehicles left anywhere on the island, or prices doubled.
- Choosing a vehicle that is too small : a mini city car with 4 people and suitcases struggles on the hills of the north.
- Ignoring the fuel policy : return the car with a full tank — there is a petrol station near the airport.
- Not photographing the vehicle at pick-up: walk around it with your phone, it is your best guarantee.
- Overlooking the airport welcome : after an 8-hour flight, an hour's queue at the desk ruins your arrival. Choose a rental company that meets you in person — that's our speciality.
When is the best time to go?
The dry season (December to April) is sunny and dry — this is high season. The rainy season (June to November) alternates sunshine with short tropical showers: flights are cheaper, the island is green and the beaches are quiet. For car rental, September–November offers the best availability.
